At the forefront of Starfleet’s renewed commitment to exploration stands the USS Navigator, NCC-98401.
An Odyssey-class command explorer, the Navigator has been designed for long-range missions beyond the established boundaries of Federation space. She combines the scientific reach of a deep-space explorer, the diplomatic facilities of a mobile embassy and the resilience required to operate far from immediate Starfleet support.
The Navigator is more than a starship. She is a workplace, a home and a shared responsibility for the officers, specialists and civilians aboard her.

A New Generation of Explorer
The Odyssey class was developed to meet the demands of a changing galaxy.
Starfleet needed a vessel capable of undertaking almost any assignment: exploration, diplomacy, scientific research, humanitarian relief, emergency response or defence. The result was one of the largest and most versatile starship classes ever placed into service.
The Navigator carries that philosophy into the year 2401. She is equipped for extended independent operations and has the range, facilities and personnel to remain away from Federation support for long periods.
Her primary mission is simple:
Go beyond the edge of the map. Find what lies there. Return with the story.
Mission Profile
The USS Navigator has been assigned to venture beyond familiar Federation routes and investigate regions that remain poorly charted or entirely unexplored.
Her duties include:
- long-range exploration;
- first contact;
- diplomatic missions;
- scientific investigation;
- planetary and interstellar disaster response;
- humanitarian relief;
- rescue and recovery operations;
- and the protection of Federation lives when peaceful alternatives have failed.
The ship’s commanding officer is expected to operate with considerable independence, often making decisions without immediate guidance from Starfleet Command.

The Navigator is powered by a Yoyodyne 46A matter/antimatter reactor and is equipped with advanced warp, impulse and quantum-slipstream propulsion systems.
Her scientific capability includes extensive long-range sensors, modular laboratories, stellar cartography, planetary analysis and dedicated facilities for disciplines ranging from astrophysics to xenobiology.
Although exploration remains her central purpose, the Navigator is also fitted with powerful defensive shields, phaser arrays and variable-payload torpedo launchers. These systems are intended to protect the vessel and her crew during missions far beyond immediate Starfleet assistance.
Published Odyssey-class material describes the spaceframe as a large command-capable explorer with advanced sensors, redundant systems, saucer separation and an embedded Aquarius escort vessel.
Multi-Vector Operations
The Navigator can operate as three coordinated spacecraft.
Primary Hull
The primary saucer contains many of the ship’s command, scientific, diplomatic, medical and residential facilities. It can function independently during emergencies or separated operations.
Secondary Hull
The secondary hull contains the main engineering spaces, navigational deflector, primary warp systems and significant defensive capability.
USS Compass
Docked within the Navigator’s aft section is the USS Compass, an Aquarius-class embedded escort.
The Compass can operate independently for reconnaissance, rescue, courier, escort and tactical-support missions. It allows Starfleet to deploy a smaller vessel when the Navigator herself would be too large, too visible or otherwise unsuitable for the task.
The Compass is an important part of the public ship profile defined in the Uncharted Course Operations Specification.
The La Forge Bridge Retrofit
One of the Navigator’s most distinctive features is her bridge.
During the final commissioning refit, the vessel’s original Odyssey-class command centre was replaced with a custom bridge inspired by the USS Enterprise-D.
The project was overseen by Commodore Geordi La Forge after the events of Frontier Day. Having spent years restoring the Enterprise-D at the Fleet Museum, La Forge adapted the philosophy of its bridge for a modern 25th-century starship.
The Navigator’s bridge is not a replica. It combines the open, circular layout and strong crew sightlines of the Enterprise-D with contemporary interfaces, hardened computer systems and modern Starfleet technology.
Its design includes:
- central command seating;
- adjacent executive and advisory positions;
- forward flight-control stations;
- a broad perimeter of adaptable consoles;
- direct sightlines between command and department officers;
- independent local computer processing;
- and emergency manual-control pathways.
The result is a command environment built around communication, visibility and teamwork.
Technology may change, but a bridge works best when its people can work together.
Science, Diplomacy and Exploration
The Navigator carries extensive facilities for scientific investigation and diplomatic engagement.
Her laboratories can be adapted for different missions, while her sensor systems can study distant stellar phenomena, unfamiliar lifeforms, subspace disturbances and planetary environments.
Diplomatic facilities include conference suites, secure negotiation rooms, guest quarters and adaptable environments for visiting delegations.
The vessel can serve as a mobile research centre, emergency command post or temporary diplomatic station when operating far from established Federation facilities.
Life Aboard
With approximately 1,600 people aboard, the Navigator is a community as much as a starship.
Her complement may include:
