Community Standards
OUR COMMUNITY
Star Trek: Uncharted Course is built around collaboration, creativity and a shared love of Star Trek. These Community Standards exist to help make the project a welcoming, respectful and enjoyable place for everyone who takes part.
By joining the project, every member agrees to contribute to a community where people can create, roleplay and communicate without harassment, discrimination, intimidation or unnecessary conflict.
RESPECT AND INCLUSION
Treat every member with courtesy and respect, regardless of their background, identity, experience, beliefs or level of confidence. Discrimination, harassment, hate speech, bullying or deliberately exclusionary behaviour will not be accepted.
Members should make a reasonable effort to use the names, pronouns and forms of address requested by others. Honest mistakes can happen, but repeated or deliberate disrespect is not acceptable.
Everyone should have a fair opportunity to participate in conversations, live missions and collaborative writing. Established members should make an effort to welcome newcomers, answer reasonable questions and avoid creating closed groups that leave others feeling excluded.
PLAYER AND CHARACTER BOUNDARIES
A disagreement between characters is not a disagreement between players. In-character conflict can create strong stories, but it should always be handled with mutual trust and respect behind the scenes.
You may control only your own character unless another player has given clear permission. Do not decide what another character says, thinks, feels, does or suffers without their agreement.
Romantic, intimate, traumatic or otherwise sensitive storylines should never be introduced without discussion and consent from everyone directly involved. Any player may pause or step away from a scene if they feel uncomfortable.
SHARING THE SPOTLIGHT
Collaborative roleplay works best when every player has room to contribute. Avoid dominating scenes, answering every problem yourself or repeatedly placing your character at the centre of the story.
Support other players by responding to their ideas, creating opportunities for their characters to contribute and allowing different departments to take the lead when the situation calls for it.
No character should be able to solve every problem alone. The strongest stories come from a crew combining different skills, perspectives and personalities.
COMMUNICATION AND ATTENDANCE
Regular participation helps the Game Director plan missions fairly and gives every character a meaningful place in the story. Members should attend scheduled live sessions where possible and communicate in advance when they expect to be absent.
Real life will always come first. Perfect attendance is not expected, but unexplained or repeated absences can make it difficult to involve a character consistently and may eventually require a discussion about their place on the active crew.
If circumstances change, speak to the Game Director as early as possible. Short breaks and formal leaves of absence can be arranged, and honest communication is always preferable to simply disappearing.
LIVE MISSION CONDUCT
During live missions, keep the main mission channel focused on in-character dialogue, actions and Game Director narration. Questions, jokes, technical problems and other out-of-character discussion should remain in the designated OOC channel.
Follow the Game Director’s instructions during the session, particularly when scenes are moving quickly or several departments are involved. Questions and clarifications are welcome, but arguments about rulings should wait until after the mission.
Do not flood the channel with repeated posts, interrupt other players or ignore established scene order. Give everyone time to respond, especially during important decisions, away missions and department-focused scenes.
PRIVATE MESSAGES AND PERSONAL CONDUCT
The same standards of respect apply in private messages as they do in public channels. Do not use direct messages to pressure, intimidate, harass or continue an argument that another member has tried to end.
Respect personal boundaries and accept when someone does not wish to continue a private conversation. Unwanted romantic or sexual messages, repeated contact after being asked to stop, or attempts to make another member uncomfortable are not acceptable.
Concerns about another member’s conduct should be reported privately to the Game Director. Reports will be handled as discreetly as possible, and members should not retaliate against anyone who raises a genuine concern.
SENSITIVE CONTENT AND CONSENT
Stories may sometimes involve injury, grief, fear, conflict or other difficult themes, but sensitive material should be handled thoughtfully and never introduced purely for shock value.
Players should discuss potentially upsetting themes with the people directly involved before introducing them into a scene. No one should be pressured into writing material they are uncomfortable with.
Any player may ask to pause, change or end a scene involving sensitive material. The Game Director may also step in when necessary to protect the comfort and wellbeing of the group.
RESOLVING PROBLEMS
If a disagreement or concern arises, members should try to address it calmly and privately where appropriate. Avoid turning personal disputes into public arguments or involving other members unnecessarily.
When a problem cannot be resolved directly, or when speaking to the other person would feel inappropriate or unsafe, contact the Game Director privately. Concerns will be considered fairly, with attention given to the wellbeing of everyone involved.
Depending on the seriousness of the issue, the Game Director may offer guidance, issue a warning, restrict participation, arrange a temporary break or remove a member from the project. Serious harassment, discrimination, threats or repeated disregard for these standards may result in immediate removal.
AGREEMENT TO THESE STANDARDS
By joining Star Trek: Uncharted Course, taking part in its Discord community or participating in live missions and collaborative writing, you agree to follow these Community Standards. These guidelines may be updated as the project develops, and members will be informed when significant changes are made.
Questions, concerns or reports relating to these standards can be sent privately to the Game Director at game.director@startrekunchartedcourse.com
